"Refurbished" is printed on everything from phones to washing machines, and it doesn't always mean the same thing. For a phone, tablet or smartwatch, it should mean one specific thing: a pre-owned device that has been tested, repaired where needed, cleaned and checked by a business that then stands behind it with a warranty.

That definition matters, because it's what separates a reliable refurbished phone from a second-hand gamble. Here's what refurbishment involves, how reliable the result is, and how to check a device yourself.

What does refurbished mean?

A refurbished device has been through a process before it's sold again. A proper refurbishment includes:

  1. Data wiping. The previous owner's data and accounts are removed, including Activation Lock on Apple devices.
  2. Diagnostic testing. Software tests every function: screen, touch, cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, sensors, charging and connectivity.
  3. Repair. Anything that fails is repaired or replaced.
  4. Battery check. Battery health is measured against a minimum.
  5. Cleaning and grading. The device is cleaned and graded by how it looks.
  6. A warranty. The seller takes responsibility if something goes wrong.

If any of those steps is missing, especially testing and the warranty, the device is really just second-hand.

Refurbished vs used

A used phone is sold as it is, often by a private seller, with no checks and no warranty. A refurbished phone may have the same cosmetic wear, but it has been tested inside and out and is backed by the seller. The difference is responsibility, not appearance.

Are refurbished phones reliable?

A properly refurbished phone is as reliable as the parts inside it, and those parts have just been tested. Phones don't wear out evenly. Screens, chips and cameras usually last for many years; the parts that do wear are the battery, the charging port and, sometimes, buttons.

That's why the two things that make a refurbished phone reliable are testing and the battery.

How we test

Every device we sell is tested with M360 Diagnostics, software built for refurbishers. It checks each component and produces a report, so nothing is left to a quick visual check.

The warranty is the real test of reliability

A seller that believes its devices are reliable will say so in writing. Every refurbished device from Refurb Phone comes with a 24-month warranty, in addition to your statutory rights under Irish consumer law. It covers faults, though not drops, liquid damage or repairs done elsewhere.

Battery health: what to expect

Battery health is the percentage of a battery's original capacity it can still hold. It's the most useful single number when you buy refurbished.

Do refurbished iPhones have new batteries?

Not always. Apple's own refurbished iPhones get a new battery, but most refurbishers instead guarantee a minimum. Ours is at least 80% battery health on every device, and at least 85% in the Like New grade. A battery that doesn't meet our minimum is replaced before the device is sold.

At 80%, a phone holds about four-fifths of its original charge, which still gets most people through a normal day.

How to check battery health on an iPhone

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health (on some iOS versions, Battery Health & Charging). Maximum Capacity is the battery health percentage. The same screen tells you if the battery needs servicing.

How to check battery health on a Samsung Galaxy

On recent Galaxy phones, open the Samsung Members app, go to Support > Phone diagnostics and run the Battery status test. Some newer models also show battery health under Settings > Battery.

Understanding grades

Grades describe cosmetic condition only. Every grade should work perfectly. At Refurb Phone:

  • Like New: no visible signs of use, battery health 85% or more.
  • Very Good: slight cosmetic signs of use, battery health 80% or more.
  • Used: visible scratches or scuffs, battery health 80% or more, at the lowest price.

Our grading page shows photos of each grade side by side.

Are refurbished phones worth it?

They are if they come from a seller that does the steps above and puts them in writing. Before you buy, check that the listing or the seller's site states:

  • the warranty length and who honours it;
  • the minimum battery health;
  • how condition is graded;
  • whether the phone is unlocked (ours work on Three, Vodafone, Eir and the networks that use them);
  • how returns work. Online purchases from EU businesses can normally be cancelled within 14 days, and our refund policy explains the process.

There's an environmental benefit too. Every phone that gets a second life is one fewer new device that has to be manufactured.
